Formula
How it works: The tool estimates how long BAC may take to drop from a current value to a selected target level.
Worked Example
Estimating Time to Sober Up
This calculator estimates the hours needed for BAC to drop from a current level to a target level, based on average alcohol elimination rates.
- At the average rate of 0.015% per hour, each "standard drink worth" of BAC takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours to eliminate
- A BAC of 0.08% (common legal limit) takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach 0.00%
- A BAC of 0.15% (significantly intoxicated) can take 10 or more hours to reach zero
- The only way to sober up faster is to wait. No food, coffee, or activity changes the elimination rate
This is an educational estimate only. Real sobering time depends on individual factors. Never rely on any calculator to determine if you are safe to drive.
You can also calculate changes using our Alcohol Metabolism Calculator, BAC by Weight Calculator, Blood Alcohol Time Calculator or BAC Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this sober time estimate exact?
No. It is based on average elimination assumptions. Real sobering time varies significantly between individuals due to genetics, liver function, and other biological factors.
Can I use this to decide when to drive?
No. Never use any BAC calculator or sober time estimate to make driving decisions. The only reliable approach is to plan safe transportation in advance or wait until well after any estimated time.
Why does it take so long to sober up?
The liver can only process alcohol at a fixed rate (about one standard drink per hour). Unlike food, alcohol elimination cannot be sped up by exercise, coffee, or any other method.
What BAC target should I use?
For complete sobriety, use 0.00. Note that impairment can occur at BAC levels well below the legal driving limit of 0.08% in most US states.
