New Zealand Calculator FAQs
What are the PAYE brackets in New Zealand?
PAYE uses five brackets effective 31 July 2024: 10.5% on income up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. The Independent Earner Tax Credit can lower the effective rate for incomes between $24,000 and $48,000.
How much KiwiSaver should I contribute?
KiwiSaver employee rates are 3, 4, 6, 8, or 10%. Most employees pick 3% to capture the minimum employer match. Higher rates compound retirement savings significantly: 6% over 30 years roughly doubles the balance versus 3%.
What is the bright-line test?
The bright-line test taxes capital gains on residential property sold within a set window of purchase. The current 2-year rule applies to properties acquired from 1 July 2024. Family homes are usually exempt from the test.
How much can I borrow under the NZ mortgage stress test?
Banks stress-test at the contract rate plus a buffer (typically 7 to 7.5% serviceability rate). LVR caps are 80% for owner-occupiers and 70% for investors at most banks. The borrowing power calculator factors both in.
How does First Home Grant eligibility work?
You must have contributed to KiwiSaver for 3 or more years, earn under the income cap (around $95,000 single, $150,000 couple), and buy under the property price cap. Grants can be up to $10,000 for new builds.
