Formula

Casual Pay=Rate×(1+Loading%)×Hours\text{Casual Pay} = \text{Rate} \times (1 + \text{Loading\%}) \times \text{Hours}

Casual employees receive a loading (typically 25%) on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of leave entitlements. Multiply the loaded rate by hours worked.

Australia FAQs

What is casual loading in Australia?

A 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. It compensates casuals for not receiving annual leave (4 weeks), personal/sick leave (10 days), and redundancy pay. The minimum casual rate is A$24.10 + 25% = A$30.13/hour.

Do casual employees get superannuation?

Yes. Since 1 July 2022, all casual employees receive 12% super regardless of how much they earn or how many hours they work. The previous A$450/month threshold was removed.

Can casuals become permanent?

Yes. Under the Fair Work Act, casual employees who have worked regularly for 12+ months can request conversion to part-time or full-time. Employers can only refuse on reasonable business grounds. Some awards have automatic conversion after 12 months.

Do casuals get paid sick leave?

No. Casual employees do not receive paid personal/sick leave, annual leave, or compassionate leave. The 25% casual loading is intended to compensate for this. However, casuals can access unpaid carers leave and unpaid community service leave.

Is casual loading taxed?

Yes. The total casual rate (base + loading) is your gross pay and is taxed at normal income tax rates. There is no special tax treatment for casual loading. PAYG withholding applies to the full amount.

What about casual penalty rates?

Casuals receive penalty rates on top of their casual rate (including the 25% loading) for weekends, public holidays, and overtime. For example: Sunday at 2x means 2x of the casual loaded rate, not the base rate. Check your specific award.
