India Calculator FAQs
What are the GST slabs in India?
India uses four standard slabs: 5% (essentials and basic services), 12% (processed food, computers), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury, sin goods). A 0% rate applies to fresh food, milk, and education.
How do I add 18% GST to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1.18. 1,000 rupees plus 18% GST equals 1,180 rupees. To find the GST in a 1,180 rupee inclusive price, divide by 6.555 (or use 18 divided by 118).
What is the difference between CGST and SGST?
For intra-state sales, GST splits 50/50 between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). 18% GST means 9% CGST plus 9% SGST. For inter-state sales, the full amount is IGST (Integrated GST).
Which goods attract 28% GST?
Luxury and sin goods: cars, motorcycles above 350cc, tobacco, aerated drinks, and high-end air conditioners. Most other goods sit at 18% or below.
When was GST introduced in India?
GST replaced the previous patchwork of central and state taxes (VAT, service tax, excise duty) on 1 July 2017. The slab structure has been periodically revised since then.
