Japan FAQs
Is monthly pay standard in Japan?
Yes. Nearly all full-time employees in Japan are paid monthly, typically on the 25th of each month. Some companies pay on the 20th or last business day. Weekly or biweekly pay is extremely rare.
What about bonuses in Japan?
Most Japanese companies pay bonuses (shoyo) twice a year: summer (natsu no shoyo) in June/July and winter (fuyu no shoyo) in December. Typical total bonus is 2-4 months of monthly salary combined. Bonuses are taxed separately.
What is monthly tedori on JPY 4.5 million nenshu?
JPY 4,500,000 / 12 = JPY 375,000 gross monthly. After income tax, residence tax, and social insurance, monthly tedori is approximately JPY 300,000.
Why does my June payslip show less tedori?
Residence tax (juminzei) deductions begin in June each year, based on the previous year income. If this is your first year of residence tax, the drop can be significant. Deductions continue in 12 monthly installments through the following May.
What is the 13th month concept in Japan?
Japan does not have a formal 13th month salary. However, the combined summer and winter bonuses (often 2-4 months total) function similarly. When Japanese companies advertise nenshu, they sometimes include expected bonus months in the annual figure.
