Sri Lanka Rates and Rules
Z-score is the average of three subject Z-scores: Z = (Mark - Subject Mean) / Subject SD. UGC uses Z-score for university selection across Physical Science, Biological Science, Commerce, Arts, and Technology streams. Mean and SD vary each year and are released after results.

Estimate your Sri Lankan G.C.E. Advanced Level Z-score and Island Rank from your three subject marks. The University Grants Commission (UGC) uses Z-scores rather than raw marks to normalize across subjects with different difficulty. Each subject has a Mean (average mark) and Standard Deviation (spread) that change every year and are released only after results. This predictor uses historical weighted averages by stream to give a planning estimate. A Z-score above 1.5 is generally good for local universities, while courses like Medicine and Engineering in Colombo or Gampaha typically need 2.0 or higher.

Formula
The Z-score for each subject is calculated by subtracting the subject mean (μ) from the raw mark and dividing by the standard deviation (Ļ). The final Z-score is the average of the three subject Z-scores.
Sri Lanka FAQs
What is a good Z-score for Sri Lankan university entrance?
It varies by stream and district. A Z-score above 1.5 is generally competitive for local universities. High-demand courses like Medicine and Engineering in top districts like Colombo and Gampaha typically require 2.0 or higher. Arts streams have lower cut-offs because the candidate pool is smaller.
How is the A/L Z-score actually calculated?
For each of your three main subjects, Z = (Your Mark - Subject Mean) / Subject SD. The Department of Examinations publishes the Mean and SD per subject after results are released. Your final Z-score is the simple average of the three subject Z-scores. General English and the Common General Test do not enter the calculation.
Why does my predicted Z-score differ from the official one?
The official Z-score uses the actual annual Mean and SD released by the Department of Examinations. This predictor uses historical weighted averages because current year values are not yet available. Differences of 0.1 to 0.3 are common, especially when the difficulty of a paper changes year to year.
Can I have a negative Z-score?
Yes. A negative Z-score means your raw mark was below the subject average for that year. It is mathematically valid but significantly reduces university entrance chances since UGC ranks candidates from highest to lowest Z-score.
How is Island Rank predicted?
Island Rank depends on where your Z-score falls in the distribution of all candidates in your stream that year. We approximate the distribution using historical Z-score data. Actual rank can shift based on candidate pool size, with about 250,000 to 300,000 students sitting A/Levels each year across all streams.
Do district quotas affect my eligibility?
Yes. UGC reserves about 40% of university seats for the all-island merit list and the remaining 60% for district merit and merit-cum-district quotas. This means a 1.7 Z-score in Trincomalee may secure the same course as a 2.0 Z-score in Colombo for some programs.
