Formule

PAYG per Period = (Annual Income Tax + Medicare Levy) / Pay Periods

PAYG withholding is the tax your employer deducts from each pay. The annual tax liability is divided by the number of pay periods (52 weekly, 26 fortnightly, or 12 monthly).

Questions Frequentes

What is PAYG withholding?

PAYG (Pay As You Go) is the system where your employer deducts estimated income tax from each pay and sends it to the ATO on your behalf. It is not a separate tax, just the collection method for income tax.

Do I still need to lodge a tax return?

Yes. PAYG is an estimate based on your declared tax-free threshold status and pay frequency. When you lodge your return (by 31 October or later via tax agent), the ATO reconciles your actual liability. You may get a refund or owe additional tax.

Why does my PAYG seem too high?

PAYG tables assume your current pay rate continues all year. If you started mid-year, had irregular pay, or have two jobs claiming tax-free threshold, PAYG may over-withhold. Lodge your return to get the excess refunded.

What is a PAYG summary?

Previously called a Group Certificate, the PAYG payment summary shows total gross income and tax withheld for the financial year. Most employers now report directly to the ATO via STP (Single Touch Payroll), so you see it in myGov.

Can I vary my PAYG amount?

Yes. If you expect your actual tax to be lower (due to deductions, losses, or offsets), you can apply to the ATO for a PAYG variation. This reduces withholding per pay period so you do not have to wait for a tax return refund.
