France Calculator FAQs
How do I add 20% TVA to a price?
Multiply by 1.20. β¬100 plus 20% TVA equals β¬120. To find TVA in a β¬120 inclusive price, divide by 6 (since TVA is 1/6 of the gross at 20%).
What is the 10% intermediate TVA rate used for?
Restaurants, takeaways, public transport, hotel accommodation, renovation work on older homes, and most cultural events. The 10% rate replaced the previous 7% rate in 2014.
When does the 5.5% reduced rate apply?
Most food (groceries, school meals), books, water, residential gas and electricity, feminine hygiene products, energy improvement work, and access to live performances all use the 5.5% rate.
What is the 2.1% special rate for?
2.1% applies to medicines reimbursed by social security, the press (newspapers and magazines), and live theatre tickets for the first 140 performances.
Is TVA the same as VAT?
Yes. TVA (Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutee) is the French term for value added tax. France was one of the original countries to introduce VAT in 1954.
