Questions Frequentes

How is freelancer social insurance different?

Freelancers join National Health Insurance (kokumin kenko hoken) and National Pension (kokumin nenkin, fixed JPY 16,980/month) instead of employee shakai hoken. NHI premiums are based on previous year income and vary by municipality. No employer matching.

Do I need to file a tax return as a freelancer?

Yes. Freelancers must file kakutei shinkoku (final tax return) by March 15 each year for the previous calendar year. Use the blue return (ao-iro shinkoku) for additional deductions of up to JPY 650,000 with proper bookkeeping.

When must I charge consumption tax?

Businesses with revenue over JPY 10 million in the base period (2 years prior) must register and charge 10% consumption tax. Since October 2023, the qualified invoice system means even smaller freelancers may register to issue valid invoices for business clients.

What is the blue return special deduction?

The ao-iro shinkoku tokubetsu kojo provides up to JPY 650,000 deduction from business income if you maintain double-entry bookkeeping and file electronically (e-Tax). With single-entry bookkeeping, the deduction is JPY 100,000. This is one of the biggest tax benefits for freelancers.

What business expenses can I deduct?

Common deductions: home office portion of rent and utilities, business equipment and supplies, transportation, communication costs, professional development, insurance, and depreciation on business assets. Keep all receipts for 7 years as required by the NTA.
