How to Play

  1. 1
Look at the scale. The left side has a mystery "X" block and some weights. The right side has a total weight.
  2. 2
Your goal is to get "X" by itself on one side of the scale.
  3. 3
To keep the scale balanced, whatever you do to one side, you MUST do to the other side.
  4. 4
Remove an equal amount of weight from both sides until only X remains.

Top Tips!

β€œWhen dealing with negative numbers (e.g., X - 4 = 10), you effectively have "balloons" pulling the scale up instead of weights pushing it down. To get rid of 4 balloons, you need to add 4 heavy weights to BOTH sides!”

Making the Abstract Concrete

The concept of an equal sign "=" is often misunderstood by young learners as simply meaning "the answer is next." In algebra, the equal sign actually means "is exactly balanced with."

The Equation Scales of Justice game visually corrects this misconception. When a student sees that moving a block from the left side without doing the same to the right makes the scale tip over, the golden rule of algebra clicks instantly.

Physical Manipulation Builds Memory

Instead of memorizing mechanical inverse operations, players physically interact with the variables. Clicking to "remove 3 blocks from both sides" builds a much stronger kinesthetic memory of how equations work.

By the time they graduate to solving abstract variables on paper, they will subconsciously visualize this balance scale, drastically reducing common algebraic errors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whatever operation you perform on one side of the equal sign, you must perform the exact same operation on the other side. This keeps the equation "balanced."
Letters, like X or Y, are called variables. They are just placeholders for a number we don't know yet. The goal of algebra is to act like a detective and figure out what number is hiding behind the letter.
An inverse operation "undoes" another operation. Addition undoes subtraction (and vice versa). Multiplication undoes division.
