How to Play

  1. 1
    Step 1: Type an "Input" number into the hopper and click Drop.

    Step 2: Watch the machine process it and see your "Output" number.
  3. 3
    Step 3: Repeat with a few different numbers to build your Data Table.

    Step 4: Look for the pattern! Use the Crack the Code panel to guess the rule.

    Step 5: Hit Submit Rule to see if you cracked the machine!

Rules

  • You can test up to 5 numbers before you must submit a rule.
  • In Easy mode, the rules are 1-step (e.g., +4, -2, *3).
  • In Hard mode, the rules are 2-step (e.g., 2x + 1, 3x - 2).
  • Score points for cracking the rule using the fewest number of tests!

Top Tips!

Always test 0 and 1 first! Dropping in 0 will instantly give you the constant (the "+ b" part of y = mx + b). Dropping in 1 will give you the sum of the multiplier and the constant. This makes cracking the code much faster.

An input/output table records the numbers you put into the machine (input, typically "x") and the numbers that come out (output, typically "y"). Analyzing this table helps you find the rule.
Look at how the input changes into the output. Does it increase? Try addition or multiplication. Does it decrease? Try subtraction or division. If the change is constant, it might be a simple 1-step rule like "+ 5".
In hard mode, the machine might do two things, like multiply the input by 2 THEN add 1 (y = 2x + 1). You will need multiple test numbers to solve it!
