Formula
How it works: Use weight percentages for current coursework and final exam to solve target or predicted grade.
Worked Example
Planning Your Final Exam Strategy
This calculator answers the question every student asks at the end of a semester: "What do I need on the final?" It uses your current grade and the exam weight to compute the minimum required score.
- If the required score is above 100%, the target grade is not mathematically achievable
- If the required score is below 0%, you have already secured the target grade regardless of the final
- Higher final exam weights mean the final has more power to change your grade, both up and down
- You can also use this in reverse: enter a known final score to predict your final course grade
Knowing your required score helps you allocate study time efficiently. If you need a 95 to get an A but only a 60 to keep a B, that changes your strategy.
You can also calculate changes using our Forgetting Curve and Revision Scheduler, Test Grade Calculator, Grade Average Calculator, Weighted GPA Calculator or Semester GPA Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why must the weight percentages add up to 100?
Course grading components represent the full course grade. Current coursework weight plus final exam weight must total 100% to ensure the calculation is valid.
What if the required final score is above 100?
This means the target grade is mathematically impossible to achieve. You would need to lower your target grade or check if extra credit opportunities exist.
How do I find out how much my final is worth?
Check your course syllabus for the grading breakdown. Common final exam weights are 20%, 25%, 30%, or 40% of the total course grade.
Can I predict my grade if I already took the final?
Yes. Switch to prediction mode, enter your known final exam score, and the calculator will compute your projected final course grade.
How can I put this Final Grade Calculator on my blog or website?
Yes, the Final Grade Calculator is fully embeddable. Tap "Embed" above to configure appearance and copy the code. It is free to use, works on any platform (HTML, WordPress, CMS), and adjusts to any screen size automatically. Visit calculory.com/services/embed-calculators for the complete guide.
