COORDINATE PLANE BATTLESHIP
Geometry Games Math Game
Learn (X, Y) graphing by hunting for hidden pirate ships on a coordinate grid! Play in Quadrant I (positive numbers) or all 4 Quadrants (positive and negative).
How to Play
- 1Choose your difficulty: Easy (Positive numbers only) or Hard (Positive and Negative numbers).
- 2The pirate fleet has hidden 5 ships on the grid.
- 3Enter an X and Y coordinate, or click directly on the grid to fire a cannon.
- 4A hit is marked with an explosion (💥), while a miss is marked with a water ripple (🌊).
- 5Find all 5 ships in as few guesses as possible to win the game!
Rules
- Coordinates are written as (X, Y).
- The X-axis runs horizontally (left to right). You must always read or enter the X coordinate first.
- The Y-axis runs vertically (up and down). You must read or enter the Y coordinate second.
- The origin is the center point at (0, 0).
- You cannot guess the exact same coordinate twice.
Top Tips!
“Rather than guessing randomly, try firing your cannons in a pattern! Start by guessing coordinates spaced 2 or 3 units apart (like a checkerboard). Once you get a hit, search the immediate neighboring coordinates (up, down, left, right) because ships might be larger than 1 square (though in this basic mode, ships are 1x1, finding one might mean others are clustered nearby!).”

Plotting a Point in Quadrant I
How do you plot the point (3, 4)?
- 1Start at the origin (0, 0).
- 2Look at the first number (the X-coordinate). It is 3. Move 3 spaces to the right along the horizontal axis.
- 3Look at the second number (the Y-coordinate). It is 4. Move 4 spaces up along the vertical axis.
- 4Mark your point right there!
You move right 3, and up 4.
Plotting with Negative Numbers
How do you plot the point (-2, 5)?
- 1Start at the origin (0, 0).
- 2The X-coordinate is -2. Because it is negative, move 2 spaces to the left.
- 3The Y-coordinate is 5. Because it is positive, move 5 spaces up.
- 4Place your point.
You move left 2, and up 5. This lands you in Quadrant II.
