PERIMETER BUILDER
Geometry Math Game
How to Play
- 1You are given a target Perimeter goal (e.g., "Build a shape with a perimeter of 16").
- 2Click on the grid to place fence pieces.
- 3Ensure the shape is completely closed so the sheep cannot escape.
- 4Count the outside edges of your blocks to ensure your perimeter matches the goal exactly.
Top Tips!
βRemember that perimeter only measures the OUTSIDE edges! If you place two square blocks right next to each other, the edges that touch are now on the inside and no longer count toward your total perimeter.β
Area vs. Perimeter: The Classic Mix-Up
The single most common mistake in early geometry is confusing area (the interior space) with perimeter (the exterior border). Traditional worksheets fail to help because both are calculated using the same numbers on a flat page.
Perimeter Builder physically separates these concepts. Players actively construct the "fence" (perimeter) without worrying about the "grass" (area) inside, cementing the definition physically.
Tactile Spatial Reasoning
Spatial reasoning is a critical component for later STEM success, from chemistry to architecture. By manipulating blocks on a grid and counting the exposed edges, students develop an intuitive sense of how 2D shapes behave when combined or separated.
This tactile experimentation builds mental rotation skills far better than static drawings.
