Canada FAQs

What are the CDCP income thresholds for co-pay?

If your adjusted family net income is under $70,000, you pay no co-pay and receive full coverage. Between $70,000 and $79,999, you pay a 40% co-pay. Between $80,000 and $89,999, your co-pay is 60%. Families earning $90,000 or more are not eligible for the CDCP.

What dental services are covered by the CDCP?

The plan covers a wide range of services: preventive care (exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants), restorative care (fillings, crowns, root canals), prosthodontics (dentures, bridges, implants in some cases), oral surgery (extractions), and periodontal treatments. Cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening is not covered.

How do I know if I am eligible for the CDCP?

You must be a Canadian resident, have filed your most recent tax return, have an adjusted family net income under $90,000, and not have access to any private dental insurance through an employer, spouse, parent, or provincial program. All age groups became eligible during 2025.

How much does a dental cleaning cost under the CDCP?

A standard oral exam and cleaning typically costs approximately $300 to $400. If your income is under $70,000, the CDCP covers 100% of this cost. At the 40% co-pay tier ($70K-$80K), you would pay about $120 to $160 out of pocket. At the 60% co-pay tier ($80K-$90K), you would pay about $180 to $240.

Can I choose any dentist with the CDCP?

You must visit a dental provider who has registered to participate in the CDCP through Sun Life, the plan administrator. Not all dentists have opted in to the program. You can search for participating providers on the Sun Life CDCP provider directory or call 1-833-537-4342.

Do I need to apply every year for the CDCP?

Yes. CDCP eligibility is reassessed annually based on your most recent tax return. You must continue to file your taxes each year to maintain eligibility. If your income changes and crosses a threshold, your co-pay tier will adjust accordingly for the following benefit period.

Are CDCP benefits taxable?

No. Dental benefits received under the CDCP are not taxable income. You do not need to report any coverage amounts or co-pay savings on your income tax return. The plan is designed to be a non-taxable health benefit for eligible Canadians.
