Formula

#
Core Formula
Tax=Price×VAT Rate100\text{Tax} = \text{Price} \times \frac{\text{VAT Rate}}{100}

How it works: Add: IVA = imponibile x rate/100, totale = imponibile + IVA. Remove: imponibile = totale / (1 + rate/100).

Worked Example

Add 22% IVA to 100 EUR.
1Step 1: IVA = 100 x 22/100 = 22 EUR.
2Step 2: Totale = 100 + 22 = 122 EUR. Remove IVA from 122 EUR: imponibile = 122 / 1.22 = 100 EUR. At 10% (hotel): 100 EUR becomes 110 EUR. At 4% (bread): 100 EUR becomes 104 EUR.

Italy VAT (IVA) Rates

Italy applies IVA (Imposta sul Valore Aggiunto) at three main rates, with the standard rate being the highest in the EU.

  • Standard rate: 22% on most goods and services (the highest standard VAT rate in the EU)
  • Reduced rate: 10% on restaurants, hotels, renovation work, water, electricity, and some food
  • Super-reduced rate: 4% on essential food (bread, milk, vegetables), books, newspapers, and first-home purchases
  • Electronic invoicing (fatturazione elettronica) mandatory for all Italian businesses since January 2019

Italy follows the EU VAT directive. All consumer prices include IVA. Use this calculator to convert between imponibile (pre-tax) and IVA-inclusive amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IVA rate in Italy for 2026?

Italy standard IVA rate is 22%, the highest standard VAT rate in the EU. Reduced rates are 10% (restaurants, hotels, renovation) and 4% (essential food, books). The 22% rate has been in effect since 1 October 2013.

What items get the 4% super-reduced IVA rate?

The 4% rate applies to essential food staples (bread, pasta, milk, fruit, vegetables, olive oil), books, newspapers, and the purchase of a first home (prima casa). This is one of the lowest VAT rates in Europe for basic necessities.

How do I remove IVA from an Italian invoice?

Divide the IVA-inclusive total by (1 + rate). At 22%: imponibile = totale / 1.22. For 244 EUR: imponibile = 244 / 1.22 = 200 EUR, IVA = 44 EUR. At 10%: divide by 1.10. At 4%: divide by 1.04.

What is Partita IVA?

Partita IVA is the Italian VAT identification number, required for all businesses and self-employed professionals (liberi professionisti). It is an 11-digit number used for invoicing, tax filing, and EU intra-community transactions. Apply at the Agenzia delle Entrate.

Is electronic invoicing mandatory in Italy?

Yes. Fatturazione elettronica (e-invoicing) has been mandatory for all Italian businesses since 1 January 2019 for B2B and B2G transactions, and since 1 July 2022 for forfettari (flat-rate regime businesses). Invoices must be transmitted through the SDI (Sistema di Interscambio) platform.
