Army Body Fat Calculator

Army body fat calculator using the AR 600-9 circumference-based method for 2025. The Army tape test measures neck and waist (male) or neck, waist, and hip (female) circumferences along with height to estimate body fat percentage. Maximum allowable body fat varies by age and gender: males 20-26%, females 30-36%. Used when soldiers exceed the weight screening table.

Formula

Male: BF% = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76Female: BF% = 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387Result compared against AR 600-9 age and gender standards

The Army uses a DoD circumference-based formula from AR 600-9. For males, it uses neck and waist measurements with height. For females, it adds hip circumference. The result is compared against age-based maximum standards.

Preguntas Frecuentes

How does the Army tape test work?

For males: measure neck and waist circumference. Body fat = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76. For females: measure neck, waist, and hip. Body fat = 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387.

What are the Army body fat limits?

Males: 20% (age 17-20), 22% (21-27), 24% (28-39), 26% (40+). Females: 30% (17-20), 32% (21-27), 34% (28-39), 36% (40+). Exceeding these limits results in enrollment in the Army Body Composition Program.

When is the tape test administered?

The tape test is only administered if a soldier exceeds the weight limit on the screening table (based on height). If you are within the screening weight, no tape test is required regardless of appearance.

What happens if I fail the tape test?

Soldiers exceeding body fat limits are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). They have 6 months to meet standards. Failure to progress can lead to involuntary separation from service.

Is the tape test accurate?

The circumference method has limitations. It can overestimate body fat for muscular soldiers and underestimate for those with less muscle mass. However, it is the Army standard and the only method used for official record. Some soldiers request DEXA scans for personal tracking.
