Formula

Core Formula
Fee=Amount×Rate%+FixedGross=Net+Fixed1Rate%\text{Fee} = \text{Amount} \times \text{Rate\%} + \text{Fixed} \qquad \text{Gross} = \frac{\text{Net} + \text{Fixed}}{1 - \text{Rate\%}}

How it works: In forward mode you enter what the customer is charged and the calculator subtracts the Stripe fee to show your net payout. In reverse mode you enter the net you want to receive and the calculator grosses up the charge so that after Stripe takes its cut you land on that target. ACH Direct Debit applies a $5 per-transaction cap on the 0.8 percent fee.

Worked Example

US standard card, charge $100 forward mode:
1Step 1: Rate = 2.9 percent, Fixed = $0.30
2Step 2: Fee = $100 x 0.029 + $0.30 = $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20
3Step 3: Net = $100 - $3.20 = $96.80
4Step 4: Effective rate = $3.20 / $100 = 3.20 percent
Reverse mode, receive exactly $100 net:
1Step 1: Charge = ($100 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $100.30 / 0.971
2Step 2: Charge = $103.30 (round to nearest cent)
3Step 3: Verify: $103.30 x 0.029 + $0.30 = $3.30 fee, net $100.00

How Stripe Fees Work and When to Use Forward or Reverse Mode

Stripe charges a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed per-transaction fee. For US standard cards the rate is 2.9 percent + $0.30 per successful charge. The percentage covers card-network interchange and assessment costs, while the fixed fee covers Stripe infrastructure. International cards add a 1 percent premium, and if Stripe performs currency conversion another 1 percent is added. ACH Direct Debit uses a much cheaper 0.8 percent flat rate with a $5 cap, making it the go-to method for large B2B invoices.

  • Forward mode answers "if I charge X, how much do I receive?". Use it for pricing pages, checkout previews, and payout reconciliation.
  • Reverse mode answers "what should I charge so I net X?". Use it for invoices where you need a specific amount after fees, such as contractor payments or flat-fee bookings.
  • ACH Direct Debit caps the fee at $5 per transaction, so it is dramatically cheaper than cards for any charge above roughly $172 (where 2.9 percent crosses the cap).
  • International and currency-converted charges each add 1 percent on top of the base card rate. Factor these in when quoting global customers.
  • This calculator excludes Stripe Tax, Radar, Instant Payouts, Connect application fees, and cross-border premiums. Those are separate line items on the Stripe dashboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Stripe fee for US card payments?

Standard US card transactions cost 2.9 percent of the charge plus a $0.30 fixed fee. A $100 charge produces a $3.20 Stripe fee and a $96.80 net payout. International cards add 1 percent (so 3.9 percent + $0.30), and currency conversion adds another 1 percent.

How do I gross up a charge so I receive exactly the amount I want?

Switch the calculator to "Reverse (net to gross)" mode and enter the net amount you want to receive. The calculator applies the formula Charge = (Net + Fixed) / (1 - Rate%) so that after Stripe takes its percentage and fixed fee, you land on your target net. For $100 on a US card: charge the customer $103.30.

Why is ACH Direct Debit capped at $5?

Stripe caps its 0.8 percent ACH fee at $5 per transaction, so a $10,000 ACH charge still only pays a $5 fee instead of $80. This makes ACH much cheaper than cards for large B2B invoices. The cap applies per transaction, not per month.

Are there differences between Stripe fees across countries?

Yes. UK uses 1.5 percent plus 20 pence for standard cards and charges in GBP. EU uses 1.5 percent plus 0.25 EUR for EEA cards and charges in EUR. US uses 2.9 percent plus $0.30. International or currency-converted transactions add premiums. Each preset in the calculator reflects the current published pricing.

Does this calculator include Stripe Tax, Radar, or payout fees?

No. This tool only covers the core processing fee (percent + fixed). Stripe Tax, Radar fraud protection, Instant Payouts (1 percent), Connect platform fees, and cross-border fees are billed separately. Add those to your own spreadsheet if they apply to your business.

How accurate are the preset rates?

Presets track Stripe public pricing pages as of 2026. Stripe occasionally adjusts rates or introduces new products, so verify against stripe.com/pricing before using the result for contract or investor numbers. For custom negotiated rates, use the "Custom rate" preset.
