Formula
How it works: Calculates the sum of weighted risk factors (Age, Systolic BP, eGFR, HDL, Smoking), compares it to the population mean (26.19), and outputs the true probability of a cardiovascular event within 10 years.
Worked Example
AHA PREVENT™ Equations: A New Era in Risk Assessment
The American Heart Association launched this tool to replace the older Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE). Medical professionals use it daily to help patients understand their risk of heart disease, stroke, and for the first time, Heart Failure. Built on modern data, it focuses heavily on Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic syndrome.
- Kidney Data Included: Uses eGFR to provide comprehensive focus on kidney health.
- Race-Free Validation: Removes historical race-based bias in clinical calculations.
- Younger Age Range: Built specifically for adults starting from age 30, up to 79.
- Broader Outcomes: Includes Heart Failure along with Total CVD (Heart Attack and Stroke).
Our custom implementation runs calculations locally in the browser to provide a layer of privacy and speed that server-side medical tools often lack, and is optimized as the Lanka-CKM Predictor for improved regional context research.
You can also calculate changes using our BMI Calculator or BMR Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the AHA PREVENT Calculator?
The AHA PREVENT Online Calculator is a tool designed by the American Heart Association to assess the 10-year total cardiovascular disease risk, including heart failure risk for the first time.
How is PREVENT different from previous calculators?
Unlike older models like PCE, PREVENT includes eGFR (kidney function data), does not rely on race, applies to adults starting at age 30 instead of 40, and additionally evaluates the risk of heart failure.
Why does eGFR improve risk calculations?
Because the equations focus on Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic syndrome, measuring kidney function through eGFR gives the model a fuller picture. E.g., at 55 years old, a normal eGFR of 60 strongly protects your heart health scoring.
What constitutes low or high risk?
A 10-year risk of less than 5% is generally considered low, while levels above 7.5% suggest borderline-to-intermediate risk requiring lifestyle choices, and above 20% indicates high risk. Discuss your 0.8% or similar results with your doctor.
Is my health data kept private?
Yes. Because Calculory runs calculations locally right in your browser, your sensitive data like blood pressure and eGFR are never sent to external clinical servers or stored online.
