Formula

Core Formula
DPO = Today - Ovulation DateImplantation Window = Ovulation + 6 to 12 daysEarliest Test = Ovulation + 10 daysReliable Test = Ovulation + 14 daysExpected Period = Ovulation + 14 days

How it works: Counts days from ovulation to today, identifies the implantation window where pregnancy first becomes detectable, and shows when home pregnancy tests become reliable.

Worked Example

Ovulation occurred on April 15, 2026. Today is April 25, 2026.
1Step 1: DPO = April 25 - April 15 = 10 DPO
2Step 2: Implantation window = April 21 to April 27 (6-12 DPO)
3Step 3: Earliest test = April 25 (10 DPO)
4Step 4: Most reliable test = April 29 (14 DPO)
5Step 5: Expected period = April 29
6Step 6: Phase = Implantation window, late luteal phase

Understanding the Two-Week Wait

Days past ovulation (DPO) is the count from your confirmed ovulation day to today. It is the standard way to track the two-week wait between ovulation and your next expected period or pregnancy test. Each DPO milestone has biological meaning: implantation, hCG production, and test reliability.

  • 0 DPO is ovulation day, 1 to 5 DPO is the early luteal and fertilization stage
  • 6 to 12 DPO is the implantation window, when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining
  • 10 DPO is the earliest you can take a sensitive home pregnancy test
  • 14 DPO is when most home pregnancy tests are reliable, and is also when your period typically arrives
  • False negatives are common before 10 DPO due to low hCG levels

A negative test before 10 DPO does not rule out pregnancy. Wait until 14 DPO and retest with first-morning urine for the most reliable result. If your period does not arrive by 16 DPO and you have a negative test, retest after 48 to 72 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does DPO mean?

DPO stands for "days past ovulation". It counts the days between your confirmed ovulation date and today. DPO is widely used in the trying-to-conceive (TTC) community to track the two-week wait before a pregnancy test.

When can I take a pregnancy test?

Sensitive home pregnancy tests can detect hCG starting around 10 DPO, but false negatives are common before 14 DPO. The most reliable testing day is 14 DPO with first-morning urine. If you test at 10 DPO and get a negative, retest at 13 to 14 DPO.

What happens during the implantation window?

Implantation typically occurs between 6 and 12 DPO when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Some people experience light spotting (implantation bleeding) or mild cramping. After implantation, hCG production begins and starts climbing rapidly, eventually becoming detectable on a pregnancy test.

I am 9 DPO with a negative test. Am I out?

Not necessarily. At 9 DPO, hCG levels are often too low for reliable detection, even on sensitive tests. About 15 percent of pregnancies do not produce a positive test until 12 DPO or later. Wait until at least 12 to 14 DPO before drawing conclusions.

What is the difference between DPO and gestational age?

DPO counts days from ovulation. Gestational age counts weeks from your last menstrual period (LMP), which is about 14 days before ovulation. So 14 DPO is roughly 4 weeks gestational age (28 days from LMP). Doctors use gestational age, while the TTC community uses DPO for daily tracking.

Are implantation symptoms reliable?

Implantation symptoms (spotting, cramping, breast tenderness) are subjective and overlap heavily with normal premenstrual symptoms. They are not a reliable pregnancy indicator. Only a positive pregnancy test or quantitative blood hCG confirms pregnancy. This calculator is for educational TWW tracking and is not medical advice.
