Frequently Asked Questions
What does the score recommend for anticoagulation?
Generally, anticoagulation is strongly recommended for a score of 2 or more in men and 3 or more in women. For a score of 1 in men or 2 in women, clinicians may consider anticoagulation based on individual risk and preference.
Why does sex matter in the score?
Studies show that female patients with atrial fibrillation have a statistically higher risk of stroke than males with the same other risk factors, which adds 1 point to the score.
Is this used for all heart valve conditions?
No. The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score is specifically validated for "non-valvular" atrial fibrillation. Patients with moderate-to-severe mitral stenosis or mechanical heart valves usually require anticoagulation regardless of this score.
