Core Formula
eGFR=142×min ⁣(Scrκ,1) ⁣α×max ⁣(Scrκ,1) ⁣1.200×  0.9938Age×[1.012 if female]eGFR = 142 \times \min\!\left(\frac{S_{cr}}{\kappa},\, 1\right)^{\!\alpha} \times \max\!\left(\frac{S_{cr}}{\kappa},\, 1\right)^{\!-1.200} \\ \times \; 0.9938^{\text{Age}} \times [1.012 \text{ if female}]

How it works: Uses the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation to estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), which represents your kidney function percentage.

Worked Example

Age 45, Male, Creatinine 1.0 mg/dL -> eGFR 102 mL/min/1.73m² (100% function).

How Kidney Health is Measured

Kidney health is primarily measured by the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), which tells us how well your kidneys filter waste. This value is often referred to as your kidney function percentage.

  • 90% to 100%: Normal kidney function
  • 60% to 89%: Mildly decreased function (Stage G2)
  • 30% to 59%: Moderate damage (Stage G3a/G3b)
  • 15% to 29%: Severe damage (Stage G4)
  • Below 15%: Kidney failure (Stage G5)
  • Albuminuria (protein in urine) is an early marker of damage even if eGFR is normal
  • The 2021 CKD-EPI equation is the most accurate formula for adults as it removes race-based bias

Early detection of kidney disease is critical because it is often "silent" until late stages. If your risk is moderate or high, consult a healthcare provider for further testing.

Note: Risk classifications are based on KDIGO 2024 Clinical Practice Guidelines. High-risk categories indicate a higher likelihood of progression to kidney failure or cardiovascular complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal eGFR level?

A normal eGFR for a healthy adult is typically 90 mL/min/1.73m² or higher. However, eGFR naturally decreases slightly with age even in healthy individuals.

Can eGFR be higher than 100%?

Mathematically, yes, but for clinical purposes, anything over 90% is considered normal function. This calculator caps the "Percentage" display at 100% for clarity.

Why is race no longer used in the eGFR formula?

The medical community (NKF and ASN) updated the guidelines in 2021 to remove race as a variable, ensuring more equitable and accurate care for all patients regardless of background.

What is Urine ACR?

Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (ACR) measures how much protein is leaking into your urine. It is a key marker for early kidney damage from diabetes or hypertension.

What should I do if my results show high risk?

A single high creatinine or low eGFR result does not always mean you have kidney disease. Results should be confirmed over 3 months. See a doctor to discuss these results and potentially repeat the test.
