Formula
The calculator applies a simplified Army style formula and compares the result to an example standard.
Worked Example
How the Army Body Composition Program Works
- The tape test measures neck and waist circumference for males, and neck, waist, and hip circumference for females
- Measurements are plugged into a logarithmic formula along with height to estimate body fat percentage
- Male body fat standards range from 20% to 26% depending on age group, and female standards range from 30% to 36%
- Soldiers who fail both weight screening and the tape test are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program for remediation
This calculator uses the male formula by default. For accurate results, take measurements at the same time of day and follow official measurement site guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a hip measurement?
Hip measurement is required for the female formula. This tool uses the male formula by default. For the female calculation, hip circumference is measured at the widest point of the buttocks.
Is this an official body fat determination?
No. This is an estimate for personal tracking and planning. Official tape tests must be administered by trained personnel following AR 600-9 procedures.
What body fat percentage does the Army allow?
Standards vary by age group. For males ages 17 to 20, the maximum is 20%. Ages 21 to 27 allow 22%. Ages 28 to 39 allow 24%. Ages 40 and above allow 26%. Female standards are approximately 10 percentage points higher.
How can I improve my tape test results?
Reducing waist circumference through cardiovascular exercise and nutrition has the largest impact. Building neck muscle through resistance training can also improve your ratio in the formula.
