Formula

#
Core Formula
Navy PRT Total = push-up points + curl-up points + cardio points.

How it works: The calculator estimates points for each event and computes an average category for an overall rating.

Worked Example

Push-ups: 60. Curl-ups: 60. Cardio: 12 minutes 30 seconds.
1Step 1: Push-ups 60 reps maps to Good category (male 20-24). Step 2: Curl-ups 60 reps maps to Satisfactory category. Step 3: Cardio 12:30 run maps to Satisfactory category. Step 4: Overall PRT category = Satisfactory (lowest individual event determines overall). The curl-ups and run limit the overall rating.

Understanding the Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT)

The Navy PRT assesses physical fitness through three events: push-ups, curl-ups (forearm plank in some cycles), and a cardio event. Each event is scored into performance categories that determine your overall rating.

  • Performance categories range from Outstanding (highest) to Failure, with Good or above required for satisfactory standing
  • Push-ups and curl-ups are each performed for two minutes, with rep counts scored by age and gender tables
  • The cardio event options include a 1.5-mile run, stationary bike, swim, or elliptical, depending on command policy
  • Your overall PRT category is determined by your lowest individual event score, so one weak event can lower your entire rating

The PRT is conducted twice per year. Consistent training across all three events is the best strategy for maintaining a strong overall rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my cardio event?

In most cases, the 1.5-mile run is the default cardio event. Some commands allow alternative cardio options like swimming, cycling, or the elliptical. This calculator uses the run as the default.

Is this the official Navy PRT scoring?

No. This is a simplified estimate. Official PRT scoring uses age and gender-specific tables published by the Navy, and your command fitness leader administers the official test.

What PRT score do I need to pass?

You must score at least Satisfactory in each individual event to pass. Your overall category is determined by your lowest single event score.

How does PRT affect my Navy career?

PRT scores factor into evaluations, advancement, and retention decisions. Multiple PRT failures can result in administrative separation.

What changed in recent PRT updates?

Recent updates have included the forearm plank as an alternative to curl-ups and adjusted scoring tables. Check the latest NAVADMIN messages for current standards.
